Books for Nepal

Books for Nepal is a project undertaken by Santosh Shah, Niraj Pant and Ravi Pant towards providing assistance to the remote villages of Nepal.
Nepal is one of the poorest third world countries. The socio-economic status of the people in Nepal is very weak. Over 90 % of the people live in villages where they lack clean drinking water, sanitary toilets, health and educational facilities. According to UNICEF, the total literacy rate for Nepal (2000 – 2005) is only 49%, which means half of the adult population in Nepal cannot even read.
The lack of literacy in parents passes to their children. In extreme cases, underprivileged Nepalese children end up working as servants in major cities and as sex slaves in the brothels of India.
With the firm belief that education can rescue these children from their inevitable fate, we are planning to collect books and monetary donations. We would greatly appreciate if you would help us in our quest to improve the education of the underprivileged children in Nepal.
We will be carrying out projects that will directly benefit the kids in the rural communities. Our recent undertaking was the Summer 2008 library project in the village of Arnaha. Soon we will be focusing on establishing schools in villages and in the long run we plan to set up some hospitals as well. To help us carry out these projects, we initiated a donation box with Niraj and Santosh being the first donors. Soon we started getting more donors. Upon the suggestions that we received, we started selling some of the books that were donated to us. Proceeds from these sales have further boosted our donation box.
